After 208 days, this finally happened...

Hello lovely dental people,

So, two hundred and eight days after starting my course, I finally went into university!

After getting my scrubs on Wednesday, I went in on Thursday to practice clinical local anaesthetic techniques in the clinical skills lab. I was pretty shocked they let us use needles on day one, but none the less it was really fun!

I have always wondered how injections were taught without using live patients, so it was interesting to discover that silicone mannequins are used in this part of the course. I know previously students have practiced on each other - which was something I was really not looking forward to! But (thankfully), this has actually been removed from the course as the procedure cannot be deemed as essential treatment.

We had a session on sharps safety, and the procedures to follow in the event of a sharps injury. Then we practiced setting up the safety plus needles and dispensing the anaesthetic solution and finally, we got to try various techniques on the mannequins.

It was enjoyable to be able to put some of the knowledge I have gained through studying at home into practice. I was also very excited to meet a few people who I've only met virtually, including my personal tutor who somehow recognised me, even in my mask!

All in all, we were only in for about two hours, which absolutely flew by, so I'm really excited for my next session in about a week's time!

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions!

Remember, #healthiswealth !

Lots of love,
